Ex Voto
The Latin phrase Ex voto is the short form for Ex voto suscepto
which means “from the vow made”. The word votum is derived from the Latin verb vovére (in English to promise or to formulate) and refers to a self-assumed obligation or an ardent wish (cupere). This formula designates a common practice in many religions. It is an obligation assumed by a believer, a people, a town, or even a nation, in order to have a wish fulfilled or to thank the deity for having answered a prayer. The vow is put on objects that are offered as gifts in sanctuaries. In Christianity, it can be addressed to God, to the Virgin Mary, to saints (or to the patron saint), with the acronym P.G.R. (Per Grazia Ricevuta, for granted grace) to fulfill a promise, regardless of whether the prayer has been answered or not. In a wider sense, the phrase Ex voto also designates the object which is offered as a gift. It is a versatile symbol that, according to archaelogical studies, goes back to prehistory. It is normally painted on canvas or tin and consists of three main elements: an illustration representing the disease (anatomical features or objects connected with illness, such as medical instruments) or the prayer; a narrative description, that illustrates the event connected with the granted grace; a representation of the deity or of the saint who was asked to intercede on one’s behalf. To sum up, the Ex voto testifies a divine intervention in a precise situation, thus functioning as a historical documentary source. Therefore neRo POP has chosen the Ex voto as a distinctive feature of the group to be included in every exhibition, in primis as the passionate narration of a tale, but also as the visual expression of a desire or a promise, and, last but not least, the disclosure of an obsession. |
